- Determine the best time to apply hydrated lime to your lawn. Because hydrated lime can burn leaves, liming in a dormant season is best. The West Virginia University Extension Service recommends liming in fall, with winter and early spring as the second and third choices, respectively. Plan to apply the lime on a day when the area will be dry and the weather will be calm instead of windy or breezy. Moist ground can cause an uneven application of hydrated lime, and wind will cause the caustic substance to blow haphazardly.
- Cover your skin as much as possible by wearing a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks, closed-toe shoes made of a non-porous material, gloves, a dust mask and protective eye-wear. Do not inhale dust particles from the hydrated lime, and avoid all direct contact with that product.
- Put hydrated lime in a drop spreader, and set the application level on the drop spreader so that no more than 20 pounds of hydrated lime will be applied per 1,000 square feet of lawn space. If you are unsure how much hydrated lime to use, use a lower amount because too much lime can kill grass.
- Spread the hydrated lime over your lawn by using the drop spreader, beginning at the farthest corner of your yard and working toward your house or garage. Walk back and forth horizontally with the drop spreader until the entire area is covered with hydrated lime. Starting in the yard’s farthest corner prevents you from walking through the lime you just applied on the ground.
